Bunion protection

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a lump or protrusion on the side or top of the joint of the large toe. Pressure, friction or inflammation of the bunion can cause considerable pain and discomfort. Bunions are often caused by poor footwear so it is therefore essential to choose footwear that has adequate width and depth in the toe box.

Bunion treatment products like sleeves, shields and pads are designed to protect bunions and relieve the pressure on them. Prolyne Technogel Pressure Protection Pads are unique re-usable self adhesive polyurethane gel pads that conform and stick to the bunion. Adhesive dressings such as fleecy web and chiropody felt are single use dressings which are cut to size and adhered to the bunion for protection.

Bunions - Dr. Weil

Bunions - Dr. Weil

foot reflexology massage

What are bunions?
Bunions are bony protrusions located at the base of the big toe that develop when the toe is slanted inward or overlaps the next toe. They can be very painful. Bunions form when the movement of the big toe influences the angle of the bones in the foot. The changes gradually develop into the characteristic bump, which over time becomes more and more noticeable.

What are the signs and symptoms of bunions?
In addition to the typical bump, signs of bunions can include red, calloused skin along the foot at the base of the big toe. With bunions, you may also develop calluses on the big toe, sores between the toes, ingrown toenail, and restricted motion of the toe. Some bunions are small and painless and some are large and extremely painful. Pressure from shoes worsens the problem.

What are the causes of bunions?
The main cause of bunions is excessive pressurebeing placed on the front of the foot, and is usually the result of wearing high-heeled shoes with pointed toes. A study by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society found that 88 percent of women in the United States wear shoes that are too small and that 55 percent of them have bunions. Overall, bunions are nine times more common in women than men. In some cases, bunions are hereditary; they also may be caused by arthritis or polio.

What is the conventional treatment of bunions?
Making sure that shoes don't press against the bunion worsening the pain is the first line of treatment. Protecting the bunion with felt or foam pads or devices to separate the first and second toes at night may be recommended as may cutting a hole in a pair of old, comfortable shoes to take the pressure off the bony protrusion. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be recommended to help relieve toe pain. In rare cases, physicians may administer injections of corticosteroids to treat the inflamed bursa (fluid-filled sac located in a joint) sometimes seen with bunions. Custom orthotic devices are another option that may be beneficial in some cases.

If bunions are causing severe foot pain or inflammation and swelling that limits daily activities and doesn't improve with rest, medication and comfortable shoes, surgery may be required. More than 100 surgical options are available for painful bunions. Some realign the foot's anatomy by cutting notches from the metatarsal bone or the bone of the big toe. The bones can then grow back without the slant that promotes bunion growth. The operation is usually done on an outpatient basis, but afterward, you probably will have to stay off your feet for a few weeks. Recovery takes about six weeks. Surgery is not recommended for a bunion that doesn't cause pain.

What therapies does Dr. Weil recommend for the treatment of bunions?
Wear comfortable shoes that don't squeeze your toes together. Sandals are ideal in warm weather.Cushioning the bunion with a donut-shaped bunion pad sold at drugstores can prevent any direct rubbing against your shoes.Have your shoes stretched to give your foot more room or consider switching to footwear customized to relieve pressure on the affected area.Soak your foot in warm water to help lessen the pain after a day on your feet.Apply ice packs several times a day to reduce swelling of painful and inflamed bunions.Take aspirin or ibuprofen for the inflammation and pain, and try supplementing with anti-inflammatory herbs such as ginger and turmeric (these work more slowlythan the drugs).See a podiatrist for specially fitted shoes or orthotic devices that may help.Sometimes, surgery is necessary. Seek a second opinion before scheduling any operation.

BUNIONS/ ENLARGED JOINTS

(HalluxAbducto Valgus)

Abunion is a common term for a medical condition known as HalluxAbducto Valgus. Hallux Abducto Valgus if the tilting of the toe awayfrom the mid-line of the body. It is usually characterised by a lumpor bump that is red, swollen and / or painful on the inside of thefoot in and around the big toe joint. There are many causes ofbunions such as hereditary factors but the primary one is tight,ill-fitting shoes which constrict the forefoot over a long period oftime. High heels and constricting shoes are the primary causes ofHallux Abducto Valgus.

Thereare many things that you can do to lessen the pain associated withthis condition, certainlythe first line of defense for this condition is good supportingshoes which have a wide toe box and a low heel. Useful treatments forbunions are to use anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin andIbuprofen gel/tablets, cold ice-pack compresses can be useful inreducing any swelling.

To reduce thepressure over the enlarged joint it is helpful to use items such asreusable gel pads and adhesive paddings as well as orthotics (adevice to realign the mechanical dysfunction of the foot). Inconjunction with protective paddings, regular use of a good footcream helps to keep the skin soft and elastic.

Ofcourse if you have diabetes, vascular insufficiency, arthritis or aneuropathy (where the sensation to the foot is diminished) immediatecare of a State Registered Chiropodist / Podiatrist is recommended.

AlthoughCortisone injections and orthotics are helpful for this condition,it is usually a surgical procedure (bunion surgery) which eradicatesthe pain.

Bone Spurs Are Not Bone | Terry Talks Nutrition

Bone Spurs Are Not Bone | Terry Talks Nutrition

Terry's Blog
Bone Spurs Are Not Bone
Many people actually go under the knife to have bone spurs scraped off the bone where the spur is attached. If not surgery, it is then steroids injected into the site of the bone spur or powerful pain relieving drugs having major side effects. Bone spurs are not bone. Spurs are made up of a collection of calcium and mineral crystals. They are not a hard undissolvable collection of bone. When calcium is leached out of the bone and soft tissue reserves to buffer the acidity of the body which is caused by the typical American diet, this free floating calcium has little ability to be reabsorbed into bone and, therefore, these calcium crystals collect in an area where there's been an injury or poor blood flow. It's like debris collecting in a river or stream impeding the flow of water. Many bone spurs can be broken up with proper massage. This is easy to do particularly if the bone spur is on the finger, hands or heel, but when bone spurs collect on the spine or in the neck area it may be difficult to do. The solution to this biochemical malfunction is to increase the acidity temporarily. This can be done with apple cider vinegar which is not the best solution since it's a very mild acidity at only 5%. A remedy that has been used for many years is the combination of calcium chloride, calcium phosphate, magnesium glycerol phosphate, ammonium chloride and betaine hydrochloride. Adding vitamin C and P-5-P to this combination would make a very powerful formula for dissolving bone spurs such as what is commonly known as heel spurs. All those suffering from osteoarthritis have some calcium deposits. Kidney stones as well can be dissolved with such a formula, but I would suggest with the approval and direction of your physician. Kidney stones are a serious condition and complications can occur if you try to move them or dissolve them without a doctor providing assistance. If and when you are free of kidney stones, P-5-P and magnesium will create a condition which prevents kidney stones from forming.

´╗┐PainPlantar Fasciitis Pain Therapy To Relieve Your Foot Pain.

As an avid runner John used to spend about 60 minutes a day 5 days a week running. If the weather was good he used to wear his running gear and head out to Central-Park. Whenever the weather was bad outside he used to go to the fitness center and run on the treadmill. One morning John got up feeling pain on his feet as he stepped out of bed to the bath room. The pain wasn't too strong but it was there. Before long the same pain was harder particularly whenever he got up and started to walk.

You should also be doing gentle calf stretching exercises. This will reduce stress on the plantar fascia in two ways. The first manner in which a relaxation of the tension in the calf muscles can help heel pain is that it will reduce the direct pull backwards on the heel bone (calcaneus). The second reason is a little bit more complicated, but essentially it is that a tight achilles tendon and calf muscles causes the rearfoot to move in a manner that causes over pronation as your leg and body move forward over your foot. To strengthen the muscles in your arch toe curls or "doming" can be done.

The treatment of plantar fasciitis may include non-steroidal anti inflammatory such as Ibuprophen, or Naproxen, rest, ice and heat modalities, or orthotic devices for shoes to provide arch support. Your doctor may inject your foot with corticosteroids or prescribe a corticosteroid cream which may provide relief. If you're overweight diet to normalize your weight may be suggested. Exercises to stretch the plantar fascia and strengthen the lower leg muscles may be suggested. Night splints which hold your foot at a 90 degree angle may be suggested to keep the plantar facia lengthened at night allow for greater stretching and decrease morning pain.

The primary component that is affected by plantar fasciitis (PF) is the plantar fascia ligament. The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous band of tissue that is both strong and elastic. Ligaments such as the fascia hold bones together. The plantar fascia attaches to the calcaneous, which is the heel bone, covers nearly the entire length of the foot and reattaches at the toes. The job of this structure is to maintain the curve of the arch of the foot during movement. Another structure that can influence plantar fasciitis is the Achilles tendon. This can often occur among athletes who do not stretch properly prior to exercise.

The foot is made up of multiple bones, ligaments and muscles that provide a significant amount of range of motion and support for the extremity and the human body above. Changes to any of the soft tissues can alter the bio-mechanics and cause pain and dysfunction in the foot and perhaps elsewhere in the body. In cases of plantar fasciitis, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine states that the condition is thought to be brought on by an overload of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is made up of soft tissue on the bottom of the foot and helps keep the arches of the foot supported. plantar fasciitis treatment

The best way to get rid of your pain is to get your plantar fascia stretched out. When the fascia lengthens it won't pull on your heel and you won't get so much pain. To do this you need to find a Chiropractic Physician or someone with extensive knowledge of the fascia to work on your foot. This procedure is extremely effective but also can be quite painful. It requires the practitioner to push into your fascia with their fingers and manually stretch out your fascia. It normally takes one treatment but may require more.

As a large amount of time is spent in bed during sleeping hours, it is important to ensure that the sheets at the foot of the bed do not constrict the foot, leading to plantar flexion in which the foot is bent straight out with the toes pointing. This constricts and thereby shortens the gastroc complex, worsening the condition. A heating pad placed under the muscles of the calf for a few minutes prior to rising may help loosen tension, increase circulation in the lower leg and reduce pain. Also during sleep, a night splint may be used in order to hold the ankle joint in a neutral position.

To carry out this stretch, stand with your weight on your left foot and place your right heel on a table or bench at or near waist height. Face straight forward with your upper body and keep both legs nearly straight. As you stand with your right heel on the table and your left foot on the ground, rotate your left foot outward (to the left) approximately 45 degrees, keeping your body weight on the full surface of your left foot (both heel and toes are in contact with the ground). You are now ready to begin the stretch.

The Achilles tendon is a group of tissues that connect the heel bone to your calf muscles. When these are inflamed, you have Achilles tendonitis. The plantar fascia is also a group of tissues; but, this links the toes to your heel. Home remedies work well for both the conditions. The treatment of plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis are almost the same. When ice packs and stretching exercises don't work for plantar fasciitis, it may be advisable for you to visit a podiatrist. A new therapy called ESWT or 'Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy' is recommended. The therapy may take about 4 months for complete cure.

This kind of plantar fasciitis stretches is done in order to stretch the hind leg as well as the ankles. You need a flat surface and an elevated area such as the curb, a stair step or a low chair. You might also need to hold or lean on to something so that you will not lose your balance. This is a very easy stretching exercise to do. Stand by the edge of the elevated item that you have chosen and stand on your toes. Keep the toes on that edge and allow the heel to drop lower than the toes. plantar fasciitis treatment
